March 29 was a very good Friday, as Ax and the Hatchetmen performed a headlining set at Thalia Hall in their hometown of Chicago. Local acts Capital Soiree and Van Go Go – a group of talented musicians involved with the Arts of Life organization – rounded out the bill, creating a night full of fun music for everyone in attendance to enjoy.

Ax and the Hatchetmen – Axel Ellis (guitar/vocals), Sal Defilippis (guitar), Hunter Olshefke (bass), Nick Deputy (drums), Phil Pistone (trumpet), and Quinn Dolan (saxophone) – used the opportunity to share new songs, including “Love Song” and “Kind of Love,” as well as favorites from their entire catalog. The band appeared to be having as much fun as fans were dancing down on the floor and Ellis took time out to express gratitude for the opportunity to play at such an important venue.

“There are a lot of you here tonight. Thank you so much for coming,” he said, before shouting out Van Go Go and Capital Soiree. “We appreciate them so much for being here tonight. What a lovely evening of music. We’re really honored to be on this stage. The last time I was here, at least, it was with Hunter, it was probably five, six years ago and we saw Houndmouth here, who we love. This is like a full circle moment for us so thank you guys so much for being here, really.”
