Twenty years have passed since sister duo Aly and AJ hit the road for the first time, back then just 14 and 16 years old as budding Disney Channel icons. Their first run followed the release of “Rush,” their first single which debuted on Radio Disney in October of 2005. Two decades later, the pair are all grown up and continuing on their journey as partners in songwriting and performing.

This year, Aly & AJ released their sixth studio album, Silver Deliverer, and are currently on the road touring North America with support from GRAMMY award winning singer/songwriter Amanda Shires. On Friday, October 10th, the tour came through Chicago, playing to a large audience at The Salt Shed. Shires kicked off the show opening with “Highwomen,” the single off of her collaborative project with Brandi Carlile released in 2019. The first chunk of her set featured fan favorites like “Hawk for the Dove” and “Take it Like a Man” before performing some newer tracks off of her most recent album, Nobody’s Girl. The newest record gives insight into the artist’s experience of her public separation from fellow country star Jason Isbell, from whom Shires got divorced in 2023.

Shires’ accompanies transparent lyrics with airy vibrato and a fearlessly played fiddle, effectively accomplishing powerful alternative folk ballads that anyone who has ever loved and lost can relate to.

When Aly & AJ took the stage, the crowd was ready for more than just early 2000s nostalgia, but the wide catalog of heartfelt, gripping tunes that the sisters have created over the last 2 decades. The pair delivered, taking the stage and opening with a block of tracks off of the new album, Silver Deliverer, and working their way through the highlights of their discography. They saved their Disney Channel hits for later in the evening, sprinkling “Chemicals React” and “Rush” in the second half of the set and saving “Potential Breakup Song” for the encore. The evening embodied a true celebration of womanhood, creativity, and passing through the seasons of life. The tour continues on through North America through mid November, wrapping up in Santa Barbara, CA near where the sisters grew up.
