“And you may ask yourself, ‘Well, how did I get here?,’ sings David Byrne on the Talking Heads’ classic “Once in a Lifetime.” Throughout his career as an artist, musician, and songwriter, Byrne has never stopped pondering big questions. From “Did I find you, or you find me?” (This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)) to “Psycho killer, qu’est-ce que c’est?” (Psycho Killer) to “Who Is the Sky?,” the last of which is the title of Byrne’s latest album, fans continue to find truth and comfort in the queries of the Grammy-winning legend.
On Tuesday, Oct. 28, Byrne kicked-off a four-night run at The Auditorium Theatre in Chicago by sharing a setlist full of songs from his storied career. After kicking things off with “Heaven,” Byrne and his talented band dove into the joyful Who Is the Sky? single, “Everybody Laughs.” “And She Was,” Strange Overtones,” and “Houses in Motion” also appeared early in the night, which featured no opener and was billed as “An Evening with David Byrne.”
It’s clear in 2025, Byrne is feeling as confident and creative as ever and the Auditorium Theatre audience responded to his energy with gleeful enthusiasm.
“At my age, at least for me, there’s a ‘don’t give a shit about what people think’ attitude that kicks in,” Byrne said in a statement at the time of Who Is the Sky?‘s release announcement. “I can step outside my comfort zone with the knowledge that I kind of know who I am by now and sort of know what I’m doing. That said, every new set of songs, every song even, is a new adventure. There’s always a bit of, ‘how do I work this?’ I’ve found that not every collaboration works, but often when they do, it’s because I’m able to clearly impart what it is I’m trying to do. They hopefully get that, and as a result, we’re now joined together heading to the same unknown place.”
