Watch: Aimee Mann performs ‘Goose Snow Cone’ on ‘A Prairie Home Companion’

Aimee Mann appeared on an episode of the newly relaunched A Prairie Home Companion with host Chris Thile that aired live this past weekend from the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, MN. The singer-songwriter performed “Goose Snow Cone” off her latest album Mental Illness.

Frequent collaborator Jonathan Coulton was also on-hand for the performance, backing up Mann on this live rendition of “Goose Snow Cone,” and likewise, adding just the right amount of vocal accompaniment and subtle acoustic guitar work to the performance. As seen in the above video, the results are exquisitely tight.

“Goose Snow Cone” is the lead track off of Mann’s new album — her first in five years — Mental Illness, which was released on March 31. The folk pop singer talked about her inspiration for the song in a Facebook post just prior to the album’s release.

“I wrote ‘Goose Snow Cone’ when I was on tour in Ireland, on a cold and snowy day. I was feeling very homesick when I saw a picture on Instagram of a cat I know named Goose,” said the singer. “Her fluffy white face was looking up at the camera in a very plaintive way, like a little snowball, and I started singing a little song about her that turned into a song about loneliness”

Mann is currently on the road and additionally just added a slew of East Coast tour dates extending into July.
