Back in September, Bon Iver announced a string of ten shows in New York state, a number of which were scheduled to go down at Brooklyn’s Pioneer Works. With the east coast slew of performances now on the books, a video has just surfaced giving fans a chance to check out Justin Vernon and company’s full Dec. 4 concert.
The 66-minute video — made available for streaming (above) — comes courtesy of NPR and offers viewers a “front row” seat to Bon Iver’s early December performance. The show is made up mostly of tracks from Bon Iver’s latest release 22, A Million but also features an appropriate staggering of songs from the group’s previous trio of albums.
Bloodbank’s “Beach Baby” makes a welcome appearance, as does For Emma, Forever Ago’s “Creature Fear” as well as “Heavenly Father” from the 2014 film soundtrack Wish I Was Here. The group also delivers strong renditions of Bon Iver, Bon Iver tracks “Calgary” and “Minnesota, WI,” the latter made all the more powerful beneath the purple haze of atmospheric light.
Vernon is an advisory board member and staunch supporter of Pioneer Works, which is described as a center for research and experimentation in contemporary culture. Founded in Red Hook, Brooklyn by artist Dustin Yellin in 2012, the Pioneer Works Foundation “seeks to transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries, foster community, and provide a space where alternative modes of thought are supported and activated in tangible ways.” (Jump to the mid-46-minute mark in the above video to hear Vernon make an impassioned pitch for the organization.)
Bon Iver are scheduled to hit the road for a European tour in late January, after which they will be making their festival rounds including a performance at Spain’s Primavera Sound and Rock the Garden in Minneapolis.
