The Metro is a beloved venue in Chicago known for offering music fans the chance to see up-and-coming artists, underground legends and local rockers within its hallowed halls. Every year, the 1,100 capacity concert club takes things to the next level with its Lollapalooza Aftershows, in the past hosting such superstar acts as Jack White, Foo Fighters and The National for sold-out performances.

On Thursday, Aug. 1, Death Cab for Cutie took the Metro stage at midnight as a packed house of devoted fans smiled with tears in their eyes grateful for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity about to unfold. Ben Gibbard and company performed a career-spanning setlist full of the melancholy music for which they are so adored.

“Marching Bands of Manhattan,” “The Ghosts of Beverly Drive” and “The New Year” were among the songs shared early in the intimate set. Death Cab for Cutie was also scheduled to play on the Bud Light Stage at Lollapalooza the following day, but the Metro show will be all but impossible to beat.
