Last fall, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit played a pair of shows at Chicago’s newest venue, The Salt Shed. These Grammy-winning musicians aren’t the type that only prioritize state-of-the-art spaces in big city markets and, on March 14 and 15 they returned to the Chicago-area to perform at the historic Rialto Square Theatre in the southwest suburbs.
Before the Wednesday night show even began, the Rialto staff and fans were already buzzing about how mind-blowing Isbell and company’s performance was during night one of their Joliet run. Night two continued to raise the bar, as the band – Isbell, Sadler Vaden, Jimbo Hart, Derry DeBorja, Chad Gamble – opened with a pair of tunes from Isbell’s 2015 album Something More Than Free, “24 Frames” and the title track. Isbell’s guitar wept sweetly on “Overseas” and “Super 8,” “Death Wish” and “Only Children” also appeared on the evening’s setlist.
The group’s upcoming album, Weathervanes, out June 9 via Southeastern Records/Thirty Tigers, is currently available for pre-order and they will be touring throughout the spring and summer.
