Singer-songwriter MIKA has built a career by creating irresistible power-pop music that artfully explores matters of the heart, often with a wink, a nod, and a whole lotta joy. Since releasing, 2007’s Life in Cartoon Motion, MIKA’s music has provided fans with a space to dance the night – and their troubles – away and on Thursday, May 7, this global superstar brought The Spinning Out Tour party to the Riviera Theatre in Chicago.

It has been over a decade since MIKA has performed in Chicago and it soon became apparent that this show was more than worth the wait.

“We cannot tell you how happy we are to be back, how happy I am to be back in Chicago. We are officially, tonight, more than halfway through this North American tour. We’re gonna sing to you tonight songs that have only come out about six months ago, as well as songs that were the first ones that you heard when we first met all those years ago,” said MIKA early in the performance.

After an opening DJ set by Greg Haus b2b Greg Corner, MIKA took the stage to perform “Modern Times.” “Eleven” soon followed with fans eager to sing along with every lyric. During “Relax (Take It Easy),” MIKA pulled this particular photographer of all people suddenly on stage to join him for an unforgettable moment. Later, he ran across the venue and up into the balcony connecting with everyone in spectacular fashion.

The song for which the tour is named, “Spinning Out,” provided the perfect musical catharsis for the maddening times in which we live when MIKA shared it midway through the set and encouraged everyone to find solace in songs.

“Somedays life is just full of crap. But ever since I was 11-years-old I would put music on my Yamaha… put my head in-between the speakers, and take comfort in the sound.”

“Lollipop,” “Grace Kelly,” “Popular Song” – and MIKA’s many fabulous wardrobe changes – were other highlights of the set. And, perhaps the biggest sing-along of the night came during the celebration that is “We Are Golden.”
