Tim Heidecker & Gregg Turkington to release ‘On Cinema’ movie extension ‘Mister America’

On Cinema at the Cinema: Mister America

Tim Heidecker & Gregg Turkington are coming to the big screen! And, no, we’re not referring to a reprisal of the duo’s beloved Ant-Man characters — Whale Boat Captain Daniel Gooobler and Dale — or Heidecker’s Mr. Richards from Fantastic Four but rather a political feature film in the universe of everybody’s favorite movie review show On Cinema at the Cinema.

Mister America will be released by Magnolia Pictures with a theatrical run expected in the fall. The film will star Heidecker and Turkington, following the former as he attempts to enter the world of politics. The movie will also cover the now-infamous Electric Sun blunder of 2017, which saw Heidecker charged with murder after 20 kids died of vape-related complications at his Apple Valley-based music festival.

“In the movie, Heidecker beats a murder charge for selling faulty e-cigarettes at an EDM festival and mounts a campaign to unseat the San Bernardino District Attorney,” states Variety. “His effort to win voters tries to overcome a lack of experience and funding by leaning into the candidate’s personal likability. It does not go well.”

Eric Notarnicola, who oversaw a number of episodes of On Cinema as well as the series’ 2018 Oscar Special, is onboard to direct the film. “We unleashed Tim into the real world to run the worst campaign in modern history, and document the process,” Notarnicola said in a statement. “I’m thrilled that Magnolia is bringing Tim Heidecker’s message to the masses.”

On Cinema at the Cinema has come a long way since its launch in 2011, beginning as a podcast and later spawning the cult web series-turned-Adult Swim TV show of the same name. More recently, Heidecker and frequent series special guest and resident film expert Turkington released an On Cinema book and even took the show live on the road (see our photos and recap of their Chicago stop here). On Cinema-heads are likely also familiar with the Decker spinoff action series and the resulting rock group Dekkar and EDM sensation DKR, all of which tie back to the original show.

Mr. America was written by Heidecker, Turkington and Notarnicola and exec-produced by Abso Lutely’s Dave Kneebone, Heidecker and Eric Wareheim.
